Our Oracle specialist Robert-Jan built a wooden frame for a recumbent bicycle. At work you usually work in a team - sharing your ideas and building a solution together, the quietness at home makes it possible to make a design and execute it exactly the way you visualised it.
Common thought is that wood is not an ideal material for bikes. Internet shows that there are relatively many wooden bikes built and that the material is very suitable.
Design
Not made with 3D CAD/CAM software, but drawn with a pencil on millimetre paper, scale 1:10. The drawing was then made again in real size and used as a template for the sawing.

Built
It concerns a recumbent bicycle with front wheel drive; the crankshaft is connected to the front fork. The front fork is the only steel element and made on demand. The wood was brought into shape using non electric tools as much as possible. The sitting part is made out of a leather Brooks saddle combined with a birch multiplex back side.
Robert-Jan succeeded in realising a beautiful as well as comfortable bike. And it works well!
